congrats to SciFrog for 4 million points!
i also recently got 4 million points. but i think my ppd is going down. the last 2 days have been bad for me, and it's looking like it might stay that way
it took me roughly 18-19 days to go from 3 mil to 4 mil. my best yet. but 4 to 5 probably won't be any faster, but we'll see

You can already play your Xbox 360 on your iMac, just not in high def. Buy an EyeTV TV adapter that has the game mode, and you can play that way. The best input available on there is an Svideo connection, so you want get HD, but it's still a pretty crisp picture.
well i knew i could go this route but 360 is about HD. playing 360 on s-video connection is like wearing Armani suit with footlocker T-shirt inside or playing blu-ray on 13 inch CRT

Apple keeps track of all the songs you buy anyway, so it's my opinion that you should be able to just "get another copy" if you have already purchased a song. I think this would be especially great for movies. That way you won't have to eat up precious hard drive space. You could purchase your movie, download it, watch it, delete it, and then re-download the movie if you want to view it again.
My thought exactly! Apple should be the holder of a virtual movie library, in which you would have access to all the films you have ever bought from Apple, possibly limited to a fixed number of computers per account. iTunes or some new software would keep track of the films in your library, including all kinds of information and trivia about the movies you have purchased. You should be able to save your films on your own hard drive or DVD-R if you wish, but Apple would provide the long-term storage capacity necessary for people who have large collections.

Agreed. I like the mocup but tbh any thunderbolt would be integrated into the dock connector and any hdmi would be strictly Bluetooth. i would not like to see a larger screen, but perhaps higher definition say 360p or 480p instead of the 240p. no real updates on the OS. it's fine. maybe just some updates in itunes as sometimes when i sync it i end up with 5 of the same albums also would like the albums to sort by year instead of name. or maybe it already does that and i havent figured it out. dono. and plz NO CAMERAS! FRONT OR BACK!

Rentals are definitely the way to go. I've only seen the Lost episodes I've downloaded once. They're just eating space on my hardrive. And if there were streaming theatrical releases, well, I'd be in heaven. I'm pissed that A Scanner Darkly isn't playing in my area, but I've watched the first 25 min. at IGN.com in HD. I'd definitely spend $1.99 to escape expensive tickets and annoying people.
According to MOSR, ( ) 10.5 will include some sort of "rewards-based" BitTorrent system. ( ) But if the Movie store also used bittorrent, it would make more sense to announce it at WWDC.

If you buy a truck or SUV because you want to tow or haul, drive offroad or use it for work, fine. If you bought it because you're being "protective", then, yes, that is a selfish motivation.
Larger SUV's and trucks often do suffer fewer driver fatalities, so in some ways they are safer (in the US), but that is because they force smaller vehicles to absorb most of the impact during a crash. Also, the rollover risk remains high, so that the "protection" you are buying is pretty conditional and may come at the expense of other people's lives.
If you want to debate it further I suggest we start another thread though, so we can keep this one on-topic.
I have no desire to debate anything. I was just very surprised to see it written that small cars are safer than Trucks and SUV's. I just wanted to know where I could go and read that information myself. You are the one who started the name calling! What a European, effete-snob calls selfish, this American calls a primal urge to survive. What I am really curious about is why you have such a control issue that you feel the need to tell anyone else what they are allowed to drive. One thing I like about being an American is that I don't have to prove a "need" to buy and drive a Full-Size Truck. I can and do drive anything I want to buy and drive. You seem to be socialist that wants to control every aspect of other peoples lives. If you want to force me to drive what you want then you'd better bring some help, cause this American is not going to give up my personal freedoms!
As far as you judging others as being selfish. That is a judgement. My belief regarding judgement is that anyone has the right to agree or disagree with anyone. But no one has the right to judge another person. Only the creator has that right.

My Guess:
iMac 17" - 1299
1.83 GHz
512MB RAM
160 SATA
8x DL
ATI x1600 - 128
iMac 20" - 1699
2.0 GHz upgradable to 2.16

250 SATA

1 GB Standard
250 SATA upgradable to 500 (as 17" and 20" is)
8x DL
ATI x1600 256
FW 800
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I didn't say upgradable on 17" and 20" hard drives because we already know that.
In a dream world I'd say the 23" vCard would go to the x1800 or something
Hmm... the problem with that line-up is that when consumers see the shiny new advert saying "Meet the new iMacs" they'll look at the clock speeds and say "What new iMacs?". I think it would be reasonable for Apple to offer...
17" iMac - $1,199 - 2 GHz, X1650 Pro 128 MB
20" iMac - $1,599 - 2.16 GHz, X1650 Pro 256 MB

The article posted:
- Desktops: 614,000, down 14% from previous quarter
- Portables: 498,000, up 60% from previous quarter
I belive these numbers are for last quarter (note they don't add to 1.3M macs). They should post a correction.

A better question is: when does the LCD OR the computer die, especially in the case of Macs? I would say never...
Sorry to disappoint you but even Apple screens do die....My Apple LCD did about a month before Applecare expired. They lost it and I had to wait 7 weeks for a replacement. Mind u, it did die so beautifully...a few flickers and then there was peace

Under god was added to the pledge in the 50s because we were scared of the Russians. Nevermind the fact that the Pledge was written in 1892, long after the Founding Fathers died.
What else you got?
You're right, I apologize for being incorrect on the pledge.
I have some shoe strings, a piece of gum and a ball of lint.
Maybe we're just confused how someone who claims to be a director of IT (and presumably takes some college to become) can fail so hard at basic history.[/QUOTE]
I'm not here to remember everything I learned, especially in a class I could have cared less about. If you asked me about "pythagorean theorem" I couldn't even answer that. Just because you are wrong on a piece of history doesn't mean your wrong on all other subjects (aside from math which I have stated that).

What are bigadv units? and how do I run them?
I am currently running two instances using:
./fah6 -local -smp -verbosity 9
do I just add the flag ' -bigadv ' to my command above?
PS: I have a 2.53ghz MBP
the command is ./fah6 -bigadv -smp 8 -local replace with 16 for 16 cores
a MP with 8 cores takes 3+ days out of 6 so it's doubtful a 2.53GHz 2 core would do it by the deadline

I hope this is true. This would be great for the Mac mini. Consumers really don't need a 20" + screen. A 17" screen (4:3 or wide) would be nice, and nice (low) price would be even nicer! Since the 20" and 23" are have the same difference is size as the 17" and 20" would (3"), and the 20" cost $699 and the 23" $999, so the 23" is $300 more, following that logic the 17" would cost $399. Hopefully it'll be cheaper than that though since you can get a Dell 17" LCD for cheaper....maybe a price drop for the whole line. :)

this is crap,
no one in their right mind would make something with 0 ports, you have to at a bare minimum have an audio out.
Hmm maybe they could get around this by shipping bluetooth headphones with it.
And the no-plug dock charging sounds good too.
Imagine a ultra portable macbook with no ports.
It would have a docking station with a lot of ports in the dock but it would all wirelessly be transfered to the macbook.
No clicking into the dock. Just set it down.
If the dock could be integrated into the desk it could look like you are just setting it on the desk.
But it is wirelessly sending power and signals with the dock which has usb, firewire, large HD, optical drive, headphone jacks, and other ports that are hidden under the desk.
Edit: just realized that in the time I took to reply someone else already pointed out bluetooth headphones.

I will be surprised if the Solo continues. Duo across the line, even C2D, would be a nice milestone and there shouldn't be a lot of money difference.
Also, let's not forget that Solos are Duos that have one core disabled. As Intel's yields have improved have improved over time (I would guess), I suspect that the need to sell Solos to recoup losses would be reduced...
The big guessing game will be when the speed bump occurs: now, on 12 September or on 25 September (Photokina)...

Bluetooth headphones?
being a bit of an audiophile, bluetooth headphones being my only option would definitely cause me not to buy this. if only for that one reason. i didn't buy $250 in-ears to sit around while i use the junk apple provides with their ipod, only wirelessly.
and knowing that jobs himself is a bit of an audiophile, he'd never sign off on this.
this thing is going to have ports. even the iphone and ipod touch do. sorry guys.

Final Cut express strips out a lot of features people won't need unless they are doing some pretty heavy lifting. I use Final Cut Pro (and have since 1.0) but for the type of editing I do here at work (small TV station) Final Cut Express would work just fine. I just use what they give me 8-).
Pro takes more video formats. It has a few other tools, I think.
It's basically designed so that if you really are a hobbyist with an HDV camcorder you really won't notice a difference between the 2 since the extra things FCP has are things you'd never use anyway.
Pretty sure FCE doesn't support 24fps, which is kinda a problem for film editing, and an increasingly bigger problem for other work as 24fps gets used more. IIRC, it doesn't have stuff like the color scopes or audio mixer either. The main difference is the suite though.
Thanks. It seems to be what I need. I'm a photographer who does the occasional video. I don't want to make video the main part of my business, just a complement. A $1000 suite is overkill. I'd be happy to pay $300 though for just Final Cut Pro or $200 for a new Final Cut Express. Fingers crossed. :)
